A Company Built on a Calling

Inspired by Heritage

Its history dates back to the 1800s and its legacy of carrying passengers along the Lowcountry coast lasted for decades.

The Seaboard Air Line Railroad was iconic in its time. And its history still remains as remnants of old tracks are found on properties throughout the South where their trains once traveled.

And it was on one such property that Grant and Jennifer Zinkon once built a home along the Stono River. They got to know their neighbor, who was a former engineer for the Seaboard Railroad. He’d built his house on land given to him by his former employer and told Jennifer and Grant stories about what the Seaboard was like.

Now, in the middle of what was once a major rail line, history continued in the homes built along the Sea Islands as Grant drew inspiration from the railroad. During the formation of his building company, they workshopped a few names, but only one felt right: Seaboard Builders.

And the railroad’s tagline of “Through the Heart of the South” was thoughtfully adopted and transformed to become “Through the Heart of the Sea Islands,” telling the story of Seaboard Builders and the home owners who trust them to build their homes.

A True Calling

Grant Zinkon has always been connected to the water. He grew up in Charleston, so the rivers and a coastal, nautical lifestyle is part of who he is.

A Citadel alumnus, Grant got a taste of building while in college, working weekends and summers for a local construction company where his mom was employed.

It didn’t take long for him to realize that homebuilding was his calling. After college, Grant worked for various builders and built his own home. Construction came very naturally to Grant and he deepened his experience and connections by working on the production side of a large residential builder.

During this time, Grant was fielding calls from people interested in what he could do, asking him to build their home, provide a renovation, or help with other projects.

So, following the 2008 Great Recession and housing collapse, Grant struck out on his own and started purchasing land for sale in the wake of the housing crisis. Since then, Grant and his team have built single-family homes throughout the Charleston area in prominent area neighborhoods from Summerville to Kiawah and Seabrook.

But his true calling resides in larger, custom residential building, thus Seaboard Builders was established. His patience and ability to listen to homebuyers requests and desires, the collaboration with architects, and Grant’s hands-on experience is what makes Seaboard different.

The Seaboard team walks the property with every homeowner. There’s a candid conversation about what’s feasible and what the owners want. And many times, if the owner hasn’t already begun working with an architect, Seaboard can provide recommendations to support their design vision. Every phase of the project is customized to meet the lifestyle needs of the owners.

Seaboard employs a team of dedicated craftsmen, experts in their field. With meticulous eye for detail and a passion for their work, the team provides caring, sincere customer service and top-notch quality execution.

Building a home is an intimate process. And that’s how we’ve designed Seaboard Builders. We want to be connected with you from the first time we walk the property and for years to come, even after construction has completed.
